Kuro Hing,

You are correct DCX2496 is not good without modification. I bet it is the kind of active digital crossover that Limage does not like!

An alternative, my very own Bastanis Atlas open baffle kit, with specially designed w-frame dipole woofer (not sealed, not ported, they open on both sides of the woofer)

100db/1w sensitivity.

Morning Limage :)

Here is a better picture.

The ports in front are for bass directivity tuning.

Also twin 15" woofers

Morning Albert,

The 2 woofers do not seem to look like 15" in size.

Optical illusion perhaps? Or otherwise the woofers are placed at the top on a back to back arrangement?

Have you guys considered Emerald Physics CS2.3?

Coaxial mid-range/tweeter, horn loaded. Also twin 15" woofers. Price is only US$3990 per pair!

The only gotcha is that they need active crossover b/w bass and mid/high. E-P sells this with Behringer DCX2496 digital processor with pre-defined room correction curve. The Behringer could be the sonic quality limitation of this setup.

Gentlemen, just what to let you know that I've spent a few afternoons there auditioning the R907 and failed to find any merit on the experience. In fact, thekong, icefox & Wher went with me last time and think they too, left with more questions than answers. Among the many obstacles, the top 3:

1) The salesman insisted in using a 40 watts piece-of-crap EL 34 integrated amp to drive the speakers, it was a mismatch of the century. Eventually, he changed to a 50 watts piece-of-crap SS pre/power amp combo and still sounded like shit.

2) The room was freaking freezing!

3) The salesman kept yapping (very loudly) on his profound knowledge in hi-fi (and what a deal he was offering!) during most part of the audition, just would not shut-up.

Morning Peter,

Apart from addition of an Esoteric X-05 Cd player, all gear currently connected at my shack are same as mentioned in the thread "Basement Projects - Super Power & System Synergy" (under 'The SS Revolution'). For 2010, I am looking to set up something in an all valves theme in 2 separate systems. Few delicate single-ended watts to try out the latest in high sensitivity speakers for early spring, and ASL Hurricane DT-200 in a 200 watts push-pull power rig for the winter (hopefully in my new studio).

The SS Revolution intro from 09-05-18..................

About a year ago, I grew tired of tube hassles and desperately seeking some form of 'liberation movement'. The urge for revenge in building a SS (solid state) system was boiling and needed to fix my addiction with a rig that requires no maintenance, no foreplay (warm-up time), no unwanted attitude, and enough whoomp to fulfill the 'emotional basics' in reproducing a large pallet of music. October 12, 2008 was the first day in 10 years, I've gone with a completely 'tubeless' system and after months of vigorous abuse, perhaps a note is in order. The rig was set-up from scratch with one specific goal - produce music convincingly 24/7 (and hassle-free!). Most of the accessaries (cables and racks) had to be custom ordered and made for esthetic and practical reasons. Although it works reasonably well with a lot less effort, "reasonably well" is not part of this exercise. In the heart of the rig is the integration of gear meeting one very specific requirement - the whole system must be "on" at all times, any component with an 'on/off' button is almost an automatic disqualification.

Hi Limage, thanks for your info. In fact I've got to that 16/F place and auditioned before (please refer to my 2nd post in this thread). The bass boomed there. The salesman said they're still looking for the optimal position. Maybe you can give them some expert consultation?

Hi Kris, I'm currently using a pair of antique Tannoy 15" Monitor Gold. The drawback is the weak cabinet. It has strong cabinet resonance at around 45-55Hz. Previously I owned a pair of 12" Tannoy Silvers but found that the whole audio spectrum is distorted and twisted (the so called noble sound). I don't like it and sold them and went back to the Golds. How about your combo?

I just walk-in to Tom Lee in TST an tried the R909 for few mins. They were placed at the corner of the room (about 1 feet next to each side wall) and unsuitable for any kind of serious audition. Based on that placement, the sound stage was shallow (vocal was just in front of the wall) and the bass was a mess (no detail, over-emphasized like having EQ at +10db below 150Hz). Just don't waste your time to get there if Tom Lee isn't going to put them at a more reasonable position for appointed audition.

One good thing is that although the sound stage is shallow (should be due to very poor placement), it's actually huge and well focused in 2D sense. The treble is also lively but, same as R907, was kind of having a feel like behind a screen. Not sure if it's due to issue with cable or other equipment.

Please let me know if you come across any showroom which is seriously demonstrating them. Thanks.

Limage hing, as suggested by the pic, the lady in sexy translucent blouse is more attractive than the Wilson being the "Centre Piece" of the room apparently.

But too bad, I don't have any of the three: i) sexy lady, ii) Wilson and iii) such big nice room.

They're less visually obstructive as the big speakers in living room.

Very true Peter. One way to get around is to make the imposing speakers the centre piece of the room and you'll end up with something like this:

Mcintosh MC-60, may not be the best match with R909 but will see.
Amps can be changed anyway if found unmatched. They're less visually obstructive as the big speakers in living room.

Morning Peter,

Thanks for the price quote on the R 909. My goodness, that's more than 2 pairs of new Maggies MG-3.6 with plenty change left for cables . I am anxious to find out the 'return' I get for that kind of money, rest assure my expectations be unreasonably high.

ps; peter, what amp are you currently using?

Price sent to your PM. If you know you can get from any place cheaper than this, please let me know.

My wife likes its look so it's a potential upgrade for me. However, I heard R907 in MK and found its bass boomed (Eva Cassidy - Live in Blues Alley) with the room and the boom had contaminated the mid/high. So I couldn't really hear its real performance.

Jamo R909
Hi there, any C-hings auditioned Jamo R909 and any comments about it?
It's demonstrated on 3/F Tom Lee (TST) and its brother R907 is on 16/F Chung Kiu (MK). It's open baffle design with 2 15" woofers.

Thanks.
