回覆 (103): Dying at Grace
This is a hell of a documentary. I have the DVDs, which I'll drop off at Saturday Yum Cha if some of you folks want to have at peek....
In a movie culture filled with fake death and callous killing, "Dying at Grace" is not just a shock to the system; it's an accusation. Filmed over 14 weeks in the winter of 2002, in the palliative care ward of the Salvation Army Toronto Grace Health Center, Allan King's wrenching record of five real deaths is a potent reminder of the fearful gap between fiction and reality………………………………………

回覆 (102): The Spirit of the Gong - Jungson Audio
It may take a generation of two before mainland manufacturers will be able to take on the barbaric honkies ……………
Judging from the cracking pace at which Chinese recordings have advanced over the last 5 years or so, I tend to be far more optimistic in as much as audio is concerned.
This situation arises out of an inevitable complex of the newly-rich-swagger — the tormenting drive to impress the world at whatever costs. Audio happens to be one handy instrument chic enough while the most important ingredient they do not lack is money.
Whatever it is to become along the footpath laid by the bullet train, we audiophiles would be delighted to see something truly ground breaking evolving out of nowhere other than our mother land.
回覆 (101): The Spirit of the Gong - Jungson Audio
Spirit of the Gong
I’m not sure if it has anything to do with NBC’s The Gong Show in the 70’s. I’m dubious if Jungson’s CEOs ever watched The Gong Show though.
Jungson is one of the hundreds of copycat manufacturers jumping on the audio bandwagon trying to make a buck. Most of the designers and audiophiles I’ve met over my years (now numbering 10) living in mainland China have never been to live classical concerts and do not have the faintest idea what sounds real. Some of them acknowledge their lack of exposure and some act with an artificially inflated ego which blocks the passage to knowledge and realizing the mistakes they’ve made. The ones who have managed to or even attempted to change their mind sets, not to mention beating the Westerners/Japanese in their own games, like OPPO Digital, are few and far between.
Old habits die hard. It may take a generation of two before mainland manufacturers will be able to take on the barbaric honkies ……………
回覆 (100): The Spirit of the Gong - Jungson Audio
feikeung, excuse me for interrupting, but this thread seems most appropriate. Caught an ad in a recent TAS from a new audio manufacturer in China named "Jungson". After having thoroughly entertained by the literature in their website starting with their logo "JungSon Audio - the Spirit of the Gong", I'm deeply puzzled by their marketing strategy. Reminds me a great deal of the old Chinese diner on East Hastings from the 70s.
ps: btw, what is the Spirit of the Gong??

Go and tell them you need no salary. The remuneration comes in the form of audio gear award: for every piece of audio you sell, you get similar amount of redemption in kind.
That must be good incentive for both parties.

回覆 (93): CJ Premier One Vs Premier Eight
sonic difference between your Premier One and Kensil’s Premier 8As
Sonically, I am afraid not.
They share the same design and topology up to the point where the One uses 6 output tubes per channel while the Eight uses 8 with corresponding higher output.
The Eights are mono-blocks of course, meaning they have separate power supplies whose pros and cons are yet to be fully resolved. Chances of getting two fully identical power transformers are too costly from a pure manufacturing standpoint. I suppose few would insist.
回覆 (92): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
>Price ok but too big and heavy to handle!<
Given the output of the Premier 1, it is actually not that heavy. As a reference, my SF Power 2 weights about 110lbs with an output of only 110W X 2, and the Rogue Zeus weights a back breaking 200lbs for 200W X 2 !!!!

回覆 (90): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
The problem with the Premier One is that it looks too plain.
You may call me old fashioned, I very much prefer the look of Premier One than Premier 8.
回覆 (89): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
The problem with the Premier One is that it looks too plain. These days people listen with their eyes. The Premier 8s look more substantial and are able to fetch four/Six times as much as the Premier One on the second hand market.
By the way, is there a discernable sonic difference between your Premier One and Kensil’s Premier 8As to justify the 4-6X price differential?
回覆 (88): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
This Premier One at below HK 20,000 including freight, you are certainly getting the biggest bang for your buck!
It looks every bit original. To play safe further, you may request a picture of the PC board with the undercover removed. It indicates whether or not the amp has been on fire.
Why not give it a try, folks?

By this time next year, we shall miss the old Sai Kung club house! However, life is about accepting changes, and how we deal with it. Therefore, with good moods all around, we plan to carry on this tradition at your new home
There shall be a few more parties before we say farewell and break the house in Christmas, such as the Fathers' Day (or mother-fucker's day in Feikeung's term), a boat launch in Tuen Ng festival, 李老祖 birthday party, a procession in the garden on HK Day for universal suffrage, Mid Autumn festival etc.
Hopefully by this time next year, we shall be celebrating the opening of the new Chaiwan club house !

limage, for all the parties you hosted over the years, we've been blessed a lifetime of fond memories. The scale and quality of these hi-fi parties are, say the least, unprecedented in Hong Kong (feel save to say anywhere in the world for that matter). By this time next year, we shall miss the old Sai Kung club house! However, life is about accepting changes, and how we deal with it. Therefore, with good moods all around, we plan to carry on this tradition at your new home, no doubt much to Margaret's horror. So until then, thanks again for a wonderful evening!

>Are you sure yours is not another class A masterpiece from our great motherland?
There is no market for Falla and Victoria de Los Angeles in our beloved motherland ----- the market is too small to justify a production run by the bootleggers.
I used to do a lot of listening with a Discman while hibernating in massage parlors. Perhaps the surfaces of the set that you have were scratched by the stupid lens. Now than I’ve ripped my favorite CDs to my laptop’s SSD, I have no use of those stupid Discmans, which I paid an arm and a leg for years ago, anymore.

My first Conrad Johnson was PV3 in kit form which was selling like hot cakes @ US$299. It’s only knob on the front panel was a dual concentric volume control. The beast, which was the only choice we had for tube preamps on a shoe-string budget other than the Dynakit PAS2/3, was very sweet sounding and had given me many pleasant and memorable moments. The Audio Researches were going for many times the price and were targeted at folks with deep pockets.
回覆 (87): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
Both CJ and ARC pioneered the modern design of tube topology where neutrality took the front seat in place of tubey romanticism ever since the late seventies. They also represented a move to bridge the difference between tube and solid state while reaping the virtue of the two. I tried both but settled with CJ because of their cheaper prices.
At below US $1750, there just won’t be anything that comes near!
回覆 (86): Audio Research vs Conrad Johnson
I had a Premier One in pristine condition offered to me for US$1750 a couple of months ago. I prefer Audio Research because of its robust construction although Conrad Johnson in general sounds warmer and quite pleasing sonically. I still have a few pieces of Conrad Johnson gear from the early days of my audio journey kicking around in my nephew’s basement in Waterloo. They are still singing happily, nothing wrong with them. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

回覆 (80): Happy Mother's Day!!!
feikeung, the Keg sure brings back childhood memories, many of my school mates worked there (Granville Island) during the summer. We, little shits used to go after closing for free booze! The food at that location was terrible, my buddies cooked most of it while stoned on grass. The "baseball" cut sirloin really tasted like a baseball! The prime rib was OK but not as good as Mother tuckers on Alberni's. BTW, I only liked the one on Alberni, and on Sunday only. Their head chef Klaus used to grill at Victoria Station and Black Angus steak house and could make one mean roast. Damn, getting hungry just thinking about it.....
ps: here's another favorite hang-out after school
回覆 (79): Happy Mother's Day!!!
I was at Mother Tuckers on a few occasions. The food there did not have much to write home about.
The Keg was cheap (in Ontario) back then and was my favorite joint on a shoe-string budget.
