"A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything"

"In heaven all the interesting people are missing"

"Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule. " ----- this is my favourite.

Your analysis on the playing of Brahms' Rhapsody is inspiring. You must be a good teacher.

' Without music, we are not alive, if you don't feel all that, don't be a musician. '

This is a much more serious statement than ' without music, life would be a mistake ' . So you are not as die-hard as Issac Stern.

Some more from 'From Mao to Mozart'

The singing Tartini at 2:30.

Stern plays these cresendo (at 6:23) similarly in his recording with Ormandy, a recording I like.

I like the chord at 7:17 a lot, a sense of restless.

From Mao to Mozart.

I like the demo a lot. Eg
The Bach (at the beginning), and how he ends it.
Sibelius demo at 1:56
Brahms 3:42

And there is Wang Jian playing Cello Sonata in g minor by Henry Eccles at 5:47

Issac Stern says the following:
Every time you take up the instrument you're making a statement, your statement. And it must be a statement of faith that you believe this is the way you want to speak. Unless you feel that you must live with music, that music can say more than words, that music can mean more. Without music, we are not alive, if you don't feel all that, don't be a musician.

CKM,

interesting thoughts. When I listened to music years ago, I focused on the playing only, not the musicians. So purely technical/ musical appreciation towards a piece. Time flies and now I am a very old woman, I am more interested in why a musician is making a sound like this. All these pianists( especially the younger ones) have excellent technique, but very few of them have character.

Anyway, it was not a compare listening. Remember I asked you to tell me your love and hate about them and spot the differences between the two playings.

This is what I called interesting listening....

tenfinger,

I think it is a challenging task, especially due to the fact that the question was asked by our house pianist on 1 peking road.

But I will do my best, hope it would not be a joke to you:

Overall I prefer Martha Argerich's playing, Martha Argerich have great dynamic contrast, in the first three minutes of Brahms's Rhapsody, the turbulent first theme was play with thundering strength as well as heart felt sensitivity, Martha Argerich also found the main melody line while Helene Grimaud struggle to do so, In short, Martha can make the piano sing while Helene only managed to get the notes right.

I noticed that Helene's tempo is much faster than Martha, but surprising it is Martha who can generate and sustain the tension in this piece of short piano music. Excitment are not always created by fast tempo.

I think a comparison like this would lead to bias anyway, maybe two chips without information of the performers would be even more challenging, since we can focus on music alone instead of biased by the information of performers.

kh,

I am not an expert of anything, just a freak in listening music.

1. HG- lots of anger, struggle, frustration in her playing. If you read her background you will know why. Some said her playing is thick, but I kind of like her style, it is very original ( no on play the piano like that before). It is not bad playing, it is her character.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A9l%C3%A8ne_Grimaud

2. MA- This is one of the best interpretations I have ever heard. Nothing more I can say. She got the spirit of this rhapsody and Brahms.

As a person that knows nothing about piano, let me try first. "Walk first and die first" but heck nothing to do at home and cool give a good laugh to others.

HG - Tempo not stable and flow seems broken at times. Banging for the sake of banging. Tone and dynamics quite flat. Too heavy and unclear left hands hindering the feel of momentum. Melody can be hard to keep track at times. In short, her piece is too profound for me to appreciate.

MA - Flow and phrasing seems more interesting and better managed but with MA's typical signature - too extreme and constrast a bit too overhelming for me. A bit disturbing and unnatural in general. I rather have a more wholesome interpretation.

I like this one better -

I never say I like Max Reger!! Look what I said yesterday! I bought his symphony and I don't like it. I don't have his piano work because I think it is not worth buying.
Someone asked me and I have to give some names....that's all. His works doesn't sound romantic at all, right? Thanks for telling me how bad they are and I will never go for it :))))

Tenfingers,

Max Reger! You mean you like Max Reger? He's the one composer I hate most. All he knew was fugue, fugue and fugue.......................a composer of swollen scores with pointless fugue! He's the only composer that I know of who looked backward rather than forward and who so unshamefully claimed himself "the only one who is in closest touch with the great masters of our rich past". His Mozart Variation is a blasphemy to Mozart, which muddled the beautiful slender theme of the A major sonata to such a heavy-footed gargantuan fugue. I can't bear a note of him! Finish.
