MBL, on Sunday afternoon, I think there must be rock star visiting, they were playing some heavy metal rock at concert level and I meant concert level, it was after the show, closed (4:30pm). Honestly, I have never (in my 30 yrs of hi-fi listening) heard any hi-fi system that can play that loud and in control. This is seriously like in a concert in an auditorium !!! While loud, it was still in control. Let’s be neutral, it has its impressive side, give them some credit !

6x12" active sub PER SIDE, a total of 12 .......... generate some serious sound pressure of a live event.

I have a taste of the full MBL 101 X-treme system recently......... indeed nice, my best of show for this year. I really think the ESL 57 does most thing right and rival that "葫蘆“, all it needs is some "aids" to move more AIR to create that live music sound pressure. So, double QUAD + a stack of Ripole subwoofer should do some wonder, my wishful thinking @@.

I really love the ESL in low volume but it has to move more air to fill up a big room (of course, I should really use it in a smaller room). Shortcut is winning the lottery and sign a check to MBL, nice and easy.

Hello, I think this is getting cold, so I better send it out. I was going to write in Chinese but my Chinese entry method is no where close to my 26 alpha typing skill.

Anyhow, I just want to highlight a few things (if I could still remember), so my notes here are random thoughts, when you view the slide show, click on the image, there are some footnotes, may have interesting info …

To get start, this is the 2nd time I went to the CAS, I think it is a little bit more focus then going to CES. CES are from manufactures, CAS is supported by local dealers who represent those high-end products. There are some slight differences when presenting & welcoming visitors than CES.

Setting, hotel, several lobby large conference room were used by larger expensive dealers. Smaller one were from smaller dealers. From the first floor to 3rd floor, one side & alternate room were demo room.
Largest lobby conference room
1, MBL, all reference and a mini MBL
2, VAC + Magico S5
3, Giant Wilson + Giant VTL
4, Sony, it was hiding behind Blue Coast Recording, so many people might not even notice.

Best sound to me:
1, YG Acoustic
Why ? I took 3 CD with me, one of them is the K2HD’s Katherine Jenkins, it’s an awful redone disc, it was very loud and compress. Any system that can’t handle loud awful passage will fail miserably. YG did very well, awful disc but not bleed our ear. Secondly, track 7 has some process artificial low frequency bass, 30hz and below  This is one of those speaker that were able to reproduce without the artifact of typical sub-bass treatment. And able to shake everything that it should shake.
Other that sounds good:

TRI Triode driving Audio Zen speakers. I am basis to this because I own TRI 845SE myself. The show demo a $20K giant TRI monoblock, 845 driving a pair of 845/211 output 50 watt pushing a pair of tower Audio Zen that is 89db efficiency. AudioZen is design by a Taiwan immigrant Robert Lee. Nice gentleman. If I have $$, I will probably buy and own a pair of his less expensive model. Robert lives in San Diego. TRI Triode is Japanese made inexpensive tube gears, it’s the poor man AirTight that doesn’t really sounds poor but does have a sonic characteristic, so probably not for everyone.

WIN Lab, show some very exotic tube gear and showing a super expensive list price. Everyone speaks Cantonese there, the “engineer” there to answer question is very very young. He said he learn from SAO Win Master. I post a question about Sao Win earlier but no one responded. Anyway, demoing a pre-amp use 845 and a power amp use some giant tube (forgot the number now) output 100w/ch. They list the price like $170K for the power-amp. I ask why so expensive, the engineer said it has 23 cow inside and started to gave me a tally of everything. I still don’t understand why it cost so much. It does sounds very dynamic and happy.

Audio Note, as usual, they do sounds nice and better than most other room  But their cheap look and cheap set up does not impress visitors. If I have nicely balance room that I can load from the corner and have plenty of silver, I will consider own a pair of their speaker, they certainly looks ugly but do sound fast.

The tape project room, they were show casing reel – reel remastering and reproducing tape. I think they are like Acoustic Sound that reproduce record where they reproduce tape. So the room was showing a giant reel-reel, this year, they use a pair of medium Focal on Sound Anchor stand. I never heard Focal until now, mighty impressive with fast heavy bass impact. Very high-fi from tape.

Proud to be Chinese, AudioSpace continue to make big time presence in the hi-fi industry in the US. Doing a good job and better. The new style looks very nice. In the show they were demoing a push-pull 300B pushing their famous LS3/5a. It’s actually very nice compare to many other rooms. Melody, Aussie base Chinese amp, also very cool looking, worth listening. Dared, small and cool looking design, perfect for office system.

MBL, on Sunday afternoon, I think there must be rock star visiting, they were playing some heavy metal rock at concert level and I meant concert level, it was after the show, closed (4:30pm). Fun news, someone came upstair while I was listening to some tubes combo system, they said the Magico blew up in smoke !! What ?! It was the smaller room, there were 2 Magico, the new S5 in the big room and the small one. Some how the small one was driven to death and in smoke !!

Hope I was able to bring you into the show a little bit, have a great week.

I had the Dali ex-flagship Euphonis MS5 before, big Dalis are power-hungry & need more than an integrated to control well. But having heard them side by side with a pair of Maggies I sold the MS5 immediately, they are just painfully slow by comparison.

I thought it was not bad at first but Patrick pointed out it was not clean, then I realize there were some transparency and control issue. This is the first time I listen to Dali speaker.

>> that system using the CAT pre-amp, AirTight power-amp and Simon York turntable into the Sonus Faber look-alike mini speaker

Minor correction, come to think of it, they were not using the AirTight that day, AT was only a display when I stop by, the set up was power by a solid state amp I believe that could be a Luxman. May be that was the problem ...

That small speaker is called Accordo, I heard its big brother, Ktema, before at Excel, Master Yu demoed it with a Prima Luna (mainland made, foreign briand) valve integrated amp, with a french CDP..... it sounds sublime, violin and classical music just click!

The workmanship on this speaker is second to none! It's like an art piece.

saw-li, saw-li, the customer I am working for is having nightmare issue since last week. Been up working 16 hrs a day. I have about 30, 40 pics to share but I need to manage it and upload. Hopefully I can finish around this weekend.

Quick glance on the thread, I did manage to sit down and listen for about 10 min on that system using the CAT pre-amp, AirTight power-amp and Simon York turntable into the Sonus Faber look-alike mini speaker. I honestly think CAT should sound better than that. I am a long time fan of CAT pre-amp but the price stop me from owning one, use to hear it from a guy using CAT driving a pair of Musica Reference RAM9 into some giant ProAc3. Like that a lot. In the show that set up while sound smooth and comfortable, there is no soul and no slam. Question is do I need to pay that much for just some comfort music ? Probably not.

Patrick point out that I like the YG speaker in this show and I did. I will talk about it when I write my summary. This year, the YG and MBL Reference did very well.

Nothing particulary impressed in the show compared with Quad ESL.
The better one was the MBL.

unfortunately, there was nil panel speaker in this show. No

2nd visit to this hi fi sound system.

The show occupied the ground floor plus all the rooms in the 2nd and 3rd floor of the hotel. most vendor use one hotel room to display their product. I saw some connected 2 rooms. it was totally different from the show in HK. we have to visit from room to room. it was not as crowd as HK.
