Those were good times!

3/5A and the Guarneri. Not a fair competition la, Dennis! I have a funny feeling that the 3/5A is going to win lor! Wait, wait wait, the Guarneri is built around.......the sound of a real instructment, the Violin, so may be the Guarneri is a more faithful reproducer!

The following are excerpts from the Stereophile review dated 1994.

"The [cabinet] comprises 42 separate elements hand-sawn from solid wood. Each element is bonded to its neighbor using organic glue and heat pressing techniques identical to those used centuries ago in the manufacture of violins.

"The walnut, maple, and limewood used for the various parts is dried naturally for two years and then stabilized in kilns. The rear of the enclosure is shaped from a single block of limewood. The interior walls of the enclosure are selectively damped using proprietary sheet copper and lead tuning elements."

The photo in the review also looks like it has a similar finish to Dennis’ unit

If my memory still serves me well, the 1st production run of Guarneri Homage was introduced in the early 90's (93 or 94), employing solid walnut in its cabinet side panels (instead of maple in later production), with a less 3-D front baffle & metal (copper + lead) internal damping. The original stands were several cm taller than later models.

Hi, thanks for support from London.

Vintage is not important indeed. It's the Esotar on 1st gen and first class material in use plus top craftmanship that count. Any suggestion on difference between gen 1 and 2?

Rumour from internet had it said that SF now uses veneer for the front facet covered with leather and they also turned to lower cost timber in their recent production.

1) why would you think the 1st generation is better?
I guess I love the Esotar tweeters and the look of Guarneri, the 1st gen is a legend itself. I first heard the Esotar when my Brothers bought the Minima 20 years ago. Quite impressive and performs well better than 11 ohm LS3/5s (don't hit my head, I am telling my feeling only). I couldn't reach the more expensive Minima, so I settled on a more affordable LS3/5s black label later on. Very cheap in 90s indeed. A pair of new 11ohm Rogers sold for $3-$4K those days.

The Minima is still serving well in my brother's LCD TV system. I understand another pair of Guarneri is connecting to RLau's big TV system in his living room pleasing the eyes of his other half.

2) I received highly favourable comments on the first gen Guarneri with the exception on deep bass extension (OK to me la) from all audio reviews and they all shows no mercy at all on its successor.

3) The adv of my SF said: "No dings or scratches, the speakers and stands are perfect save for the aforementioned "hazy mist" in the laquer."

The timber finish should be stable, or the hazing problem should explicitly deterioate after 16 yrs. So I assumed I myself is pretty safe away from the common "hazy misting" problem I had seen some terrible examples selling cheaply in Excel TST show room 10+ yrs ago. If the problem is inherently exists, the hazing problem of my pair should be minimal in the coming years of my life.

4) I traded with emporiumhifi before, no cheap stuff available but a reliable seller so far.

I am no rich guy and I am paying the speakers with my hard-earned money after tax. I hope my decision is not wrong indeed. My wife is also expecting the Guarneri. Can any experienced user or si-fu in HK tell me how good or bad this speaker can be???God bless.

Dennis,

A quick search on the net came up with a Stereophile review on the Guarneri as early as 1994. So this 1997 version is not the earliest production, but I have no idea if there were any changes in between.

You probably should be careful on the lacquered finish of the Guarneri. I have seen some early examples with spots turning cloudy white, said to be caused by the high humidity in Hong Kong, but I am not sure whether that was true. However, I didn’t see any such problem on RLau’s Guarneri.

But then, why would you think the 1st generation is better?
