The opening is quite slow, the links between each section is not smooth enough ( especially the one from minor to major). The 'passionate' sections sounds fine but the slow sections are just too relaxed. Also the chords sound different. Ashkenazy's is loud but not powerful, while Pollini's is powerful but not loud. The ending is quite disappointing too (the octave didn't accelerate enough). Interesting listening.

Its a pity that Ballade No.1 is not in the programme of Wednesday.
There is Ballade No. 2 in F, Op. 38

Now listening to Ashkenazy's. I like the one by Pollini, still.

Chopin Ballade No.1 Op.23 in G minor

I am 'forced' to go a Christmas concert every year by my friend and therefore I have to listen to it at least once a year. I always fell asleep in the middle, particularly during the slow movements. The only wonderful thing is when the audience has to stand up and sing 'Hallelujah' ( don't remember who started this, please ask cp :) ) I thank God for this because I know it is nearly finished and I can go home and get some sleep.....

For Messiah, my favourite is Otto Klemperer conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. This work seemed to be tailor made for Klemperer whose reading is steady, stately and majestic. Also with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Nicolai Gedda, Grace Hoffman, Jerome Hines as supporting cast and Wilhelm Pitz directing the Philharmonia chorus, it is hard to find a better combination.

Handel Messiah

To keep the Chopin momentum going, listened to his Piano Sonata no. 2 in B flat minor, a relative ' big ' solo piece with the famous third movement, funeral march.
First version was by Martha Argerich recorded in 1975. There was no denial of her superb technique but she was not my favourite. Her playing was agitated and restless, seemed to be in a hurry. There was relative lack of the poetic elegance and suaveness that we expect. Your attention was drawn to her technique rather than Chopin. Perhaps she was young then.
By contrast I was captured by Witold Malcuzinsky, a Poland native, pupil of the renouned Paederewsky and winner of the 1937 Chopin competition. His playing was refined, with elements of grace and aristocracy. His funeral march and Presto was just ethereal.

Let's see how Pollini tackles this piece on April 15 .

Some recordings have been with me for more than 10 years already, for those great recordings, I found it fresh each time I listened, and managed to hear some details which are new to me, but for those bad recordings, I found those deficiencies disturbing each time I listened.

Maybe it is time for me to sit back and enjoy music.

Coincidentally listened to part of Beethoven Violin concerto by Heifetz in my home yesterday. The reason being that I had listened to this piece in some one's place and was not satisfied. I had to flush out that memory.
Perhaps I am not the right person to give you an unbiased answer because I am an analog freak, meaning Vinyl and Tube only, and have discriminatory views on things concerning audio. To my ears only vinyl and tube was able to reproduce the natural timbre and harmonics of a Strad or Guarnari to satisfaction, though it is still far from the actual sound of these instruments.

CKM,

Indeed the concert on 25 February 1974 at Carnegie must be one of the greatest piano recitals of all time. That was an exhibition of flawless technique and transcendental inspiration rarely found in Bolet. Jorge Bolet is most famous for his virtuosity making him almost like a Liszt reborn, his sonority always lovely and his pianissimo second to none. Both piano playing drove women crazy and you found similar words used by critics describing their performances : magnetism, galvanism, contagion etc............... In fact most of Bolet's best known recordings and recitals covered much of Liszt's music. Chopin?, may be just that famous concert in Carnegie Hall, thanks to Philips recording the entire concert and issuing in the Great Pianist series.

Thank you for your expert opinion, as a idiot in piano playing, my view are based on listening only and would certainly miss some important detail.

But I found Bolet's playing to be quite exciting, while Rubinstein was passionate and lyrical as you mention and Cortot was sensitive big deficient in technical aspect.

CKM,

Have enjoyed reading your review. Found Bolet's playing very solid, but not as sensitive or passionate as Rubinstein's. His use of rubato is different from Rubinstein or Lipatti, but the tone is quite colourful and I agree on the speed and dynamics as you said, and his clean fingerwork is the most wonderful thing I found in his playing. Thank you and do write some more....

Chopin |

故Bolet 被稱為`The Last Romantic' 。

Yes, I've played all D.935 & D.899 Impromptus on my own before.

D.899 No.4, I prefer it in a mystery manner and I like the left hand passage in particular (1:02 of this chip). Here I will play the right hand softer to let the left hand out, the 2:17 passage can be more 沉重. Each of then ending starting 5:03 can be played better. The dog starting at 5:30 is fun. :-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SjAqbMWNkJA

And I like those sudden attacks, cresendo and the breathless ending of D.935 No.4.

Also for Mozart K.310, again, I like the left hand. But I can't handle left hand of the 3rd movement upto the standard I desired. I like pieces in minor key, especially those by Mozart.

As whole, my playing is not good.

Try Idil Biret or Horowitz. Michelangeli is certainly not a bad choice but you may also want to listen to Rosenthal and check if Liszt is correct in saying that "only a Pole could fathom completely the unique musical language of the mazurkas". Rubinstein is of course a demonstrative proof of this statement.
