The cadenza (by Schnittke) in this Kremer recording is contemporary, has the elements from Brahms Violin Concerto. I can reckon there is at least one double stopping quoted from Brahms'.

That's why so many small labels, orchestra and artists own label growing up so rapid in past few years, as I don't think any big old classical label going to sign any long term contract with them......... the market is lying, but we may expect such small labels dare and brave enough to record new and rare repertoires.

And proven Naxos vision just many years ahead of those big labels, use of adhoc engineer, eastern europe small orchestra, signing starlets and academic oriented maestros, very flexible, scalable, spending more focus and afford on artistic matters than marketing, that's why Naxos is steadily growing and strength from behind.

Thanks CKM for the bad news.

By Norman Lebrecht / February 4, 2009

"In times like these when household names are vanishing daily, the loss of a record label hardly qualifies for national mourning. But the abolition of Decca is more than just another colophon going to the wall. Decca represented something to artists and record buyers. It was the one label that scorned star power, sending tyrants like Herbert von Karajan into shock when producers and engineers refused to obey his orders. Decca was also a sound to remember, an uncluttered clarity: home-made, high-tech and unfailingly discreet, a sound that never played ping-pong with your ears.....

Still, no point waxing nostalgic. Lots of firms are going to the wall, taking their traditions to oblivion. Decca joins a long queue at the morgue. The regret is that what dies with Decca is more than just a label – it is the very concept of label as a mark of character, a name that united artists and listeners in the search for a particular quality. The idea of label defined the record industry. It is the strategic antithesis of sterile agglomerates like Universal."

---------------------------------

The advice is: go out and buy Decca recordings while their limited stock lasts. Not only Decca, IMHO, the entire Classical industry is withering, and withering fast. It would not be long before the whole industry can be certified DEAD !

listened to two famous versions of Richard Strauss Ein Heldenben, a semi autobiography of the composer. Both were recorded in the fifties, in the early stereo era.
The first is by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.. Reiner, a close friend of Strauss , gives a detailed, note perfect account of this tone poem. There are excitment, tension and drama that grabbed your attention from the beginning to the coda. The playing by CSO under the tight grop of Reiner, is simply superb. The recording, though made 50 years ago, in experimental stereo, is fresh and lively. Credit must be given to the recording team Layton and Mohr.
The other version is Karajan leading the Berliner Philharmonic, a first recording made by DG and Karajan/BPO. At that period the famous Karajan/BPO sound was gradually developing. Karajan, another Strauss specialist, gives a different approach with less firepower and drama. However there are emotion, serenity, romanism and sensuality that is intoxicating sometimes. Playing by BPO is great as ever, especially the concertmaster, Michel Schwalbe. The recording sound,in early DG stereo ,is not as good and lively as RCA.

Paganini Caprices-No.6 In G Minor

Listened to Cornelia Vasile's playing of a few Paganini Caprices (on a LP DG label) at KH's place a few nights ago. Very good violin playing plus high level of fidelity under his system, ultra high-end to me.

There is not much information about this Romanian female violinist in internet. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cornelia_Vasile

With Paganini Caprices in mind, I re-played the ones by Ricci (a LP under Decca) yesterday at home. Good playing but sort of low-fi. Find the score in internet and No.6 catch my eye. It seems to me No.6 is real difficult. Another kind of difficulties akin to 輪指技巧 in "Recuerdos de la Alhambra of Francisco Tarrega" of guitar.

This female violinist in youtube plays the Caprices at a high level of standard, especially No.6. Unlike her other Caprices clips in youtube, audio/video of the No.6 clip is seriously out-of-sync. I just wonder if it is her performance.

Anyway, if you listen to Kogan, you may find his 線條明顯較清楚. http://tw.youtube.com/watch?v=dwsmezthjyc&feature=related

For Rachmaninov Piano concerto no.2 my favourite will always be Richter and the Warsaw Philharmonic thoug I have not listen to Hough and Zimmerman. Though some may find reading by Richter idiosyncratic , I feel that he captures the essence of this extremely romantic piece like no other pianist does. Still moved and touched by his playing after years of listening and the record nearly worn out.

Piano:Zimerman Conductor:Giulini
LosAngeles Philharmonic Orchestra
CHOPIN KLAVIERKONZERTE NOS.1 & 2

CHOPIN: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra no.2 in F minor, op. 21
(1) Maestoso
(2) Larghetto
(3) Allegro Vivace

來兩個全新Rachmaninov piano concerto No.2錄音,分別由Stephen Hough/Andrew Litton/Dallas symphony 與Zimerman/Ozawa/ Boston Symphony 演奏。

Fou Ts'ong (Chinese: 傅聰, pinyin: Fù Cōng) (born 10 March 1934) is a Chinese pianist.

Born in Shanghai in 1934 to a cosmopolitan family of intellectuals (his father was the famous translator Fu Lei). Fou first studied piano with Mario Paci, the Italian founder of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. In 1953, Fou moved to Europe to continue his training at the Warsaw Conservatory, where he amazed his professors with his intuitive grasp of the mazurka rhythm. His mastery was confirmed when he won the special Mazurka Prize at the 1955 Chopin Piano Competition.

Fou had been based in London since 1960, whence he embarked on a performing and teaching career that has taken him throughout the world and been distinguished above all by his authoritative interpretations of Chopin; indeed, Hermann Hesse proclaimed him to be the only true performer of the composer's work. Among Fou's closest friends are the fellow pianists Martha Argerich, Leon Fleisher, and Radu Lupu, who, acknowledging his influence upon their musical development, were "obliged to Fou Ts'ong for all his new ideas and for opening new musical horizons for all of us."

From 1960 to 1969, he was married to Zamira Menuhin, the daughter of Yehudi Menuhin, and they had one son. Their marriage ended in divorce.[1]
