icefox,

Using a quad-core computer for merely downloading file does not sound quite right to me. I cannot tell exactly why but it sounds like buying a Clearaudio Statement and use it solely for Record Cleaning.
------
while the quad core can download files with flying colours, i'm not sure the clearaudio statement can clean records very well. so in this case, the clearaudio clearly loses out to the chinese lenovo.

Sorry fox, I guess I have not made myself clear first. The Lenovo is bought (not me, but my boy) to replace my 7 year old desk top, so obsolete that it's quite beyond upgrade.

The Lenovo is going to be an all purpose main frame for 5 work stations all around the house, taking care of everything from overseas conference to toilet flush. Down-loading high res files is but one of its trivial duties.

Do you REALLY want to open this can of worms?

Oh yes, it may not for the ultimate quality it promises but seldom achieves per se, but rather for the fear I may be left too much behind. It does no harm, I reckon, as I could always have my analogue to fall back into, just in case of a total fiasco.

If I were you and wanting to play something digital and fashionable, I would try the Korg MR-1000 or 2000 (depending if you want portability).

Instead of setting your eyes on playing some companies' creation of high-res file. I would play to your own strength. It's your software GOLD MINE. Together with your horrendously tweaked and optimized audio gear combo. (Who else on earth dare to claim getting +85% of a setup ^__^?)

This little monster has its own storage and battery powered. Imagine the scenario, hey 啊邊個邊個, here is a DSD reproduction of my 1st pressing LP through the A90, let's compare it with your flagship Wadia playing the same redbook CD (sorry, because no high res file available from the publisher yet). BTW, here is a 紅黑線,just plug that into your preamp. No need for power cord, it's battery-powered. I am sure the outcome would be quite INTERESTING.

I am still investigating if it can indeed play those off-the-shelf high-res files. I am still doing some background research on this but it's low priority. I'd rather get my mono project going.... or wash those dirty LP (I wish I have a Keith Monk RCM).. hehe!

In short, 屎弗痕, 各自各精彩, 最緊要好玩!!!!!!

Got myself a new Lenovo 4 core desktop for downloading music files. These files are to be copied into a notebook/think pad or the like to be brought back physically into my music room. I take this indirect route because I want to avoid any noise, broadband interference or radio frequencies polluting the well shielded music den.

if you use mac to do the ripping and decoding, i think aiff is the way to go. but if you use pc, i do not know whether freebie like foobar has good decoder for aiff. but if it is only one off for your trip, it does not matter which.
mdlover, are they exactly the same with different header?

aiff and wav is the same, they are raw pcm without compression while aiff has a meta space for additional info like album, artist and track info., etc.

either format is perfectly fine for both PC and Mac platform nowadays.

so, aiff will be easier for you to manage your music library.

It must be Yeller Audio in Shenzhen. The Wang (Chiu Chau lo) brothers own all the high-end shops in Shenzhen. Inventory on hand is rumored to be in excess of 300 million RMB for all the Wang Brothers' shops combined. Hong Kong audiophiles (in terms of purchasing power and cash flow) can eat shit la.

Friends, these are some snap shoots I took this afternoon in a shopping mall at SZ. It's no hifi show, when I went into the shop, I thought I went into a massive and glamorous KTV. Instead of being greet by a mamasan, a papasan like guy came to me and escorting me for a walk around the shop. There are respective rooms (at least 6 different rooms) with some outrageously expensive highend systems setup, e.g. one room with a full MBL system. I think this stuff would only happen in our motherland, China.

Thanks to Gilbert's hospitality in last Saturday, we have a chance experiencing the Holy Grail in the latest digital audio technology. Comparing the leading CD/TRANSPORT with CAS is probably the dream of many audiophiles, it all happened in one occasion. It's definitely worth keeping in the record.
