回覆 (135): CD Ripping Software
Unfortunately , using co-ax may not sound better because of the noise generated from the PC. I had another PC which sit in the cup-board. This one comes with co-ax output. The result is even worser than the Mac Combo as I found all the noise generated by power supply, hardisk and motherboard go into the DAC. The background sound very noise. Since this computer is built for video rather than music server, they are not custom made so a lot of noise generated. Hercules hing had built a custom made nettop without switching power supply and Static Ram storage, this one sound really good when we take the I2S output from his rather expensive Julie soundcard. (by (PC Standard). This is the best result I can achieve apart from Vash's premium combo. However, I2S is not standard input for DAC and only it is only available in upmarket soundcard like Julie.....

I use a freeware in Mac called Max, may be this is the problem with Max. I found itune will downscale to 44.1 when they convert wave to AIFF file. I had to use Max to convert the Flac to 24 bit AIFF.

I found some files though rip by itune directly from CD sound quite ok like "Shirley". I had mixed result with high resolution file.

What I meant was: Is there a discernable difference between FLAC/Apple’s lossless format and other formats with more compression. I was told that FLAC/Apple’s lossless format still have a lot to be desired, namely smearing of attack and loss of transients. I’ve read a few articles on this subject but I have not had a chance to put my hands on it.

The other issue is: would it be possible to put a coaxial or Tosh-link on you PC so that you can hook it up to your DAC without messing with the USB or Firewire?

FLAC can convert back to wav with some freeware as well but afterwards, sound is not a promise.
------------
this is not quite right. flac is lossless. the reverse should create an exact copy of the original.

More on itunes, it can be use under Windows environment as well. You can use either ipod touch or iphone as a remote control no matter you are using Windows or Mac OS.

Big brother feikeung,

itunes is a program under Mac OS environment, almost a full features media player/ripper for music playback for all format except FLAC.

EAC is a freeware design by German programmer aims to rip CD, create CD image with CUE sheet for Cplay. It do also have playback function but not versatile as itunes nor foobar.

FLAC is another lossless format while the size is 3/5 than WAV. AIFF can store album cover art as well (only usable on itunes).

FLAC can convert back to wav with some freeware as well but afterwards, sound is not a promise. This is verified since our last visited to accphoto's home in last Saturday.

He He, by default, it comes with EH6922, I change it to Brimar CV2493. 呢個 DAC 設計是 ok 但係用料九流, I had virtually changed almost all component except PCM1704 and CS8414. The power, clock and IV had also been upgraded with premium material...

If just for fun, try to find some 24/96 dac in 2nd market is fine. Two of my preference are Stello and Assemblage which only cost you a few thousands.

I have successfully connect the latest version of airport express to DAC via itunes but the setting lost shortly. Since I just settle down recently, I will try it again.

In respect of the connection with the DAC, toslink cable play a really important role as I found some other toslink cable sound terrible. The one I am using is a Pioneer toslink cable that I bought in Japan.

The 24/96 is the standard for Mac Core Audio, it should be ok for Mac to transmit data via toslink.

Tried MacBook to Airport Express connect DAC via toslink, play AIFF file by iTune. Sound stage, detail and resolution ok. But vocal body not enough (may be use toslink) and have some high frequency interference (wi-fi).
Now thinking how to open the air express, convert the toslink to coaxial. May improve the sound!

“I am using Mac as CAS but did not successful setup the airport express......”

Yeah Anthony, thanks for your hospitality last Sat, you have a lovely setup, not just the Mac-based CAS (it's sweet to see using iPhone to remote control the music server, isn't it?). I can definitely feel and see your heart on to this hobby. Your execution on the head-to-toe DIY setup is simply impressive. I really love the effortless and musical presentation.

Regarding the Airport Express, which one do you have? The old one (support 802.11a/b) or the latest one (that support 802.11n)?

I would be very much willing to get to the bottom of the issue with your Airport Express. I have not had mine yet, still doing research to see if it can do 24/96 wirelessly, or not, with the Airport Express. Conflicting info so far.

Can you describe the current problem with the Airport Express?

Guys,

For those who has your CAS setup ready, I would like to share a great recent discovery.

It's a website called AccuRadio - www.accuradio.com .

Music are classified into various genres, e.g. Smooth Jazz, Jazz vocal, hip-hop and etc. The pop-up player would start playing a selection in a random manner. If the selection is NOT what you like, you can always press the "next" button on the player.

While a piece is playing, the cover art and relevant record information are shown in the player. If you click on the cover art, it will bring you to the Amazon web site to buy the record online.

I am using it to taste some other music genres that I would NOT try if I have to pay my hard earn money for the CD or a download.

This is a great way for you to explore the musical world.

Thanks for your advice. Let me do some more digging ----- this CAS thing is all new to me, I feel like Alice in the Wonderland......
I have to put up with my ThinkPad for playback for now. I spend a lot of time on the road (and massage parlors) and it's a pain to have too many devices (cell phones, ipods etc) dangling around.
