Actually, we always have back-ups, sometimes triple, or even quadruple, redundancy. Just look at icefox's den! ;-)

Actually, I agree too.... Just that I expected to have backup for vintage stuff but not "new" stuff. Just like the mid I was fixing, I have 5.... Yet, I guess liking vintage stuff goes thru a general evolution -

1. Discover and impressed.
2. Start buying
3. Getting spares just incase.
4. Select the best condition component to hook up
5. Best component breaks and up goes the 2nd best and so forth...
6. Stop buying.
7. Fed up and get brave and start fixing (fixed some and ruined most.)
8. Fix and break and ruin more
9. Final destination - All to trash can.

I am probably now at phase 7.

Damn it... what a loser....

Sorry to hear the bad luck. I think vintage Hi Fi is like classic cars, they always need love and attention. With regards to the tweeter, I think you might have knocked something which trigger high voltage and surpassed the cap. Might be safer to use a higher voltage cap ? are you using a cap on the tweeter ?

Tender loving care can be limited. After fixing and caring and breaking many times, people can get stone hearted.

Actually for my supertweeter, I still don't know why or what happened. The foil inside just collapsed. I did not even know when it took place. I happened to see the supertweeter when I was fixing the mid. I used it with my active crossover for 13,000 hz up with a 1.2w amp. Probably the driver was made on Monday.

The store keeper was puzzled when I took it to him today. He asked if it still sound normal. I replied "I couldn't tell". Deep down under, I was saying "Damn... with the way I walk around, changing cds, going on internet and sometimes even watching TV, even if the tweeter blew, I could not tell. Not to mention the stupid supertweeter....".

Sometimes I wonder why bad luck always happens to me.

I always have one mid horn with cone rubbing problem due to old age. Finally put in the effort to fix it last nite and took me 3 hours.... While I thought finally system is running without anything broken but at closer look.... my Aurum Cantus G3 supertweeter which I bought recently has its ribbon collapsed inside the casing. Damn it... I was only using it for 13000+ Hz and driven by 1.2w amp. How come everything I have are either lemons or shit....

On top of that, my main DAC is broken. My main pre-amp is also at shop.

I wonder if other hifi friends have similar EQ training, or am I the only one.

My feeling of having a hassle free simple boombox is getting more and more dominant. Damn it... I can see it waving at my with a big grin....

Finally got the chance to sit down and listen to the new Joyce Cheng CD. As expected, I like it much. Among all the current singers, she is probably very very good. Enjoy it very much.

Being an underdog and being bashed at all thru these years, not giving up is actually not easy.

A side note - I also got the new Heifetz boxset. Just one comment - Must buy! Whether one is or isn't his fan, this is a a wonderful boxset.

The perfect it part is long gone. These days businessmen commercialize their products, then debug them. In no time, they launch new products with fancy gadgets to replace the old models making yours "outdated", if you are still not convinced to replace them, no worries, cos their products won't last. Before long, you'll be out again seeking for new ones.

Yet, problem with old stuff is that they need lots of tender loving care.

I am one of them that thinks there has not been much improvement in audio.

Like many other things, when first introduced, people try to make it work, and then commercialize it, perfect it and then cost cutting/niche drilling kicks in. Sooner or later honest products may disappear from markets.

Yet, problem with old stuff is that they need lots of tender loving care. I cannot remember when is the last time my system is fully working 100%...

BTW, I always like your cd combo. One of the best around, if not the best.

For some reasons, I now think 90s dacs are all good. In general - musical with great dynamic.

Mine is from the late 80's, still working fine and pumping out rich music every evening for some 20 years.

Many a time I wonder if there is really any improvement over audio gear throughout the years, apart from prices upgrade.

Not so with computers which are best upgraded every 6 months, and handphones, every 3 months. They are digital too.

The audio market must be a curious one.

A "new" singer on my radar.

I am quite impressed. Good singer and way underrated indeed.

A bit of update.

Recently, I have been toying with headphone system and making it my primary listening setup. With 2 monsters around, I now need to be very quiet after 10:00pm. Naturally, I got suck into headphones again.

To complement this mini system, I revisted CD source again. Having this new excuse, I started my trash collecting habit and got into DACs of the 90s. For some reasons, I now think 90s dacs are all good. In general - musical with great dynamic. (Reason #1-me deaf, #2 - me cheap, #3-me good at kidding myself.)

If chance permits, I would ask friends around to dig out your old neglected dac somewhere under your bed and hook it back on again. There is still a certain charm from dacs at that time (eg, 1541, PCM63...).

BenYC,

Your too kind ! ^__^

I think we can improve your LP playback even further, but like everything - patience is key. I think there are some minor tweaks we can do, but first of as agreed, lets give some tender love and care to your pre-amp and phono and this will make your system much more happier I am sure !

Big thanks to Daiwok.

I have been enlightened on what to do with my vinyl playback. The few things you did greatly enhanced my LP playback already. Yet, it is very embarrassing that my LP system is not better than my CD. (Yup, sad but true...)

Now I will bring my pre and phono for detail check and update. Hope this can also solve the bad temper of my system.

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again.

Now my sytem has almost everything I can think off, from dome to ribbon to horn to whatever, SE to push pull to whatever and even AV subwoofers. Imagine each design has its own drawback, my system probably almost every element that can sound bad.

Now I need one more thing to fill the gap - If I can put in one class D amp, my whole system can official go to the reclamation site.

On second thought, may be it's qualified already......

Thekong,

Thanks for the idea. I approached them before but back then they had much lesser models. Do you know if there is any dealer in Hong Kong carrying this brand? Or anywhere I can hear?

Thanks.

This is what I am now doing. I tried to use the protractor but did not work... so hell with it.... Not that I want to but just no choice.

Thanks thekong,

The protractor I use is a shure protractor that comes with a shure cart as well as rega's own one. I think I messed up on the pivot to spindle distance... Getting this right is hard enough for me... actually too hard. :-(
