BTW, I came across this per a friend's recommendation.
Wow, it's really cool seeing how a King of all Violin Master in conducting a Masterclass for the talented young violinists!
No 天碟 fidelity! But very enlightening and engaging!

Got a bit excited from the "distorted" and decided to home early after HH with two high hands to retreive one of Bartok great work, the six String Quartets. I had time to listen for just the first and second quartets before my CEO rush me to have my volume turn anti-clockwise!
Emmmm! Gradual lor! Lento to Allegro in the first string and then moderato to intense and back to Lento in the second string.
I dont know! I am not going to be analytical about it. I couldnt, anyway. Do I enjoy it? I dont know lor! I need more, I think!
OK, perhaps, you guys can have a go and tell me what you think!
Lucky me! I got this boxset ages ago before I realise what I was getting. Sure, no regret lor!

If not, get one by all means. Even CD is good enough.

Sorry fox, I don’t have that. I only recommend those I have listened to frequently. Every comment out of my heart, all original to be sure.

I am indeed curious, if you have any recommendation on Martzy's violin (both concerto and sonata) pieces?

Wow! And I got it just on youtube and computer speakers only. I suppose I better fix my Leak other channel crossover to allow me to bring justice to the dramatic sound!

There is a short piece called "Two Portraits opus Five", which consists of two movements, namely, the Ideal and the Distorted. They do not belong to the Rumanian Dances.

I find the portrait on the distorted particularly arousing.
Englighten me please! I went you tube to listen the Romanian suites piano and violin. What you mean by portrait on the distorted?
All I have on Bartok are the few Piano Concertos and the Six String quartet in DG label.

Bartok’s “poetic core” out of a most introvert disposition. I find the portrait on the distorted particularly arousing.

This is the recording I’m raving about. Nearly as overwhelming as the Cornish Dances are but much easier to reproduce properly, I presume.
The track is Dryad.

Dvorak cello concerto by Starker.
This famous recording needs no more introduction. Just did a comparison about the sound quality between the first pressing Mercury LP costing several thousand dollars and the latest reissue which is much more affordable. On first impression the original sounds sweeter and more mellow esp. the cello tone of Starker, the reissue sounds more hi-fi with leaning of the Starker cello tone towards the bright side. However further listening suggested that there is more frequency extension on the reissue, with faster transients, crisper attacks, better micro dynamics and transparency, making the inner details more easily heard. For those who do not have the means to own the first pressing, the reissue is a more than adequate substitute.

When the recording engineer is James Lock and the recording location is Kingsway Hall, excellent sound is almost certain. This LP ,made in 1974 , is no exception. Also one cannot find fault with the playing .

Aconcagua, Concerto for bandoneón, strings and percussion

This album sounds terrific to me with the rise and fall of massive string, the interplay of accordian and woodwind instruments almost draws my tears out, the greek female composer Eleni Karaindrou brings extra Mediterranean flavour to this classical piece with the beauty of melancholy and sadness. Eleni also plays piano in this album
A CD sounds with analog feel and awesome soundstaging (as well as correct proportion of instrument), devoid of dynamic compression and digital acidity.

Manfred Eicher: A Magnificent Obsession @ Stereophile
The follwing article is about the sound of ECM which IMHO truly reflects what the musician would like us to hear with minimum dynamic compression and devoid of echo, this label also brings me lot of knowledge and broaden my horizon about contemporary music in the spheres of Classical and Jazz, espcially the soundtrack of Greek filmscore composer , Eleni Karaindrou about his endearing and melancholic album "Eternity and a Day", a "MUST" album you gonna own if you have already collected the albums of Arvo Part, Gidon Kremer and Keith Jarret (Koln concert)...
The founder and Chief Producer of ECM, Manfred Eicher receives his rare interview from the prestigious audiophile magazine, STEREOPHILE sharing about what ECM sound means to him in the last 4 decades.
Asked about how he'd define sound that is less than ideal or just plain bad, Eicher pauses. "All this depends on how the musicians feel with each other. Musicians have to hear each other. Musicians have to have good contact with each other. Now and then, in the mix or the editing, you can repair things and also sometimes make things better, but you cannot correct things which are done from the very beginning in the wrong way.
"I like to see musicians record without earphones. It's a question of dynamics. With earphones, everything starts with mezzo forte. Musicians have a certain sound in the ear and then get inspired by that sound, get used to the sound, and maybe get distracted by the sound. Dynamically, it works so much better when you go into a good-sounding room, a good-sounding hall, and play acoustically and listen to each other, and the music flows in a very different way."
"There are many bad analog recordings. There were many bad mike positions in analog times, too. And there are many bad digital recordings and many great digital recordings. It's how you work with it. It's not a question of analog and digital only, it's a question of what kind of recordings we are talking about. I don't like to talk pro-analog or pro-digital. I like to talk pro-music."
"The return of the LP would only be for me . . . the real return would only be if everything goes analog again. When we had analog recording, the LP was the only natural sound carrier. Digital recordings on LP don't sound the same way. The tactility is a different thing. You cannot nostalgically think and reproduce what happened at that time with different microphones, with different tube microphones, with different sound equipment, in mono time, in the first stereo time. "
"Everything [in downloads] is compressed, and compression is something we always avoid in recording—it's not necessary, and it squeezes the music into a mainstream of mediocrity. Why, then, should we accept it in the download business? "

Meticulously played by Anthony Michaelson, the founder of audio brand "Musical Fidelity" who studied with Dame Thea King at Trinity College of Music (The account of Dame Thea King is the first choice of Gramophone but I prefer Peyer's more passionate reading). An audiopjhile disc if you wanna know whether the treble is grainy or not
Recorded at Henry Wood Hall in DSD mode, the freelance recording engineer is the highly revered elite, Mr Tony Faulkner, who recorded extensively for labels such like LSO live concert, RCA / BMG, SONY, Hyperion and Telarc.

For Mozart K622, the account of Gervase de Peyer and Peter Maag is always my first choice devoid of sluggish tempo or edgy sound on the top register, recorded in Kingswall Hall and produced by Kenneth Wilkinson @ DECCA.
Highly Recommended if you can still locate this old made-in-west germany account. (DECCA 4177592)
Remastering and sonic quality are first rate, interpretation-wise and playing itself are second to none

Probably the first CD I heard about Walton's Crown Imperial March several years ago, the original composition in orchestral arrangment was subsequently revised for Organ in 1960's, this CD is superbly recorded and played, an acid test for audiophile too!
The sound of organ is never overwhelming nor hefty with overloading bass, the "laid-back" presentation captured by professor Keith Johnson is highly recommended
The Crown Imperial March, composed by William Walton, was first performed at the coronation of King George VI in 1937, and substantially revised in 1963. Walton composed the march originally for performance at the coronation of King Edward VIII, which was scheduled for 12 May 1937. However, Edward abdicated in 1936 because of the divorced woman Wallis Thompson. The coronation was held on the scheduled day, with Edward's brother George VI being crowned instead.
Dun know why the producer of "King's Speech" does not incorporate this piece in their soundtrack, IMHO this work still reflects the historical meaning about the coronation of King George VI

I've always thought that Sylvia must be on the TAS list and to my shocking surprise, it is in fact NOT !
This Decca set is a must for cub audiophile or passe freak alike. Recording is done by none other than Kenneth Wilkinson at probably the zenith of his career.
Running through the whole ballet in less than 2 hours has left me in lyrical exaltation for hours.
Absolutely stunning, in music and in recording, giving you practically the best of both worlds.

Yes, this Harry Janos is a true sonic block buster. I have the wide band LP. Those WB DECCA usually don't have the name of the recording engineer printed on the record scover.
Today is the birthday of Maurice Ravel. Listened to his Piano Concerto in G this morning. The slow movement is one of the most sublime relaxing piece of the twentieth centuary and the playing by Michelangeli still reign supreme.

The Hary Janos Suite is the abridged version of Hary Janos by Kodaly. You’ll have nothing to lose, however, by getting this single in place of the 2 disc full operatic set.
An absolute block buster, as dynamically startling as it is musically satisfying. One of the handful of reference recordings in my collection although the name of the engineer has not been given.
