回覆 (37): Sonus Faber
We have a pair of Sonus faber Minima at home. The look is gorgeous and the sound is fabulous judging its small size.

Kris has mentioned Sonus Faber EXTREMA, I want a pair for myself as well. However, the asking of $60K is out of question.

回覆 (36): Christmas ideas - Monitor Audio Bronze B-2 / BR-2 / M-2 loudspeakers

Recent renaissance of the LS 3/5A only reassures my belief that this small monitor remains the benchmark against which all small speakers are to be assessed. And in terms of vocal reproduction and harmonic involvement, these little monsters are hardly challenged at all!

見下文,是否可以代替3/5A的地位?

Descended directly from the Harbeth BBC LS3/5A, the HL-P3ES2 has been in production for nearly 20 years, almost equalling that of the LS3/5A itself. It is, quite simply, the best all-round mini-monitor. When coupled to good quality electronics, the P3ES2 still continues to set the world standard for miniature monitors. At the heart of this successful design was bettering the bass performance of its predecessor and reducing coloration which is now at a level remarkable for a cabinet of such small dimensions. This design has stood the test of time excelling in the cohesion of sound stage, pin-sharp image positioning and remarkable 'big sound' - all from a small cabinet.

回覆 (34): Christmas ideas - Monitor Audio Bronze B-2 / BR-2 / M-2 loudspeakers

Morning gentlemen,

Something odd happened recently and thought be a good Christmas idea for the more value conscious audiophiles. Couple weeks ago, I saw in a SSP retail A/V store selling a brand new pair of, what I thought, Monitor Audio Bronze B-2 loudspeakers. The B-2 was a legend in it's own right back in 2002 when it was first introduced, and discontinued long ago when MA moved their factory to China from UK. In fact, many NOS B-2s ended up in China now selling for $5,000 - $6,000 RMB up from the original MSRP of around $3,000 HKD. So back at the store, looking the price tag of only $2,700 HKD, I was enthusiastically pulling out my wallet ready to take these NOS beauties home. So you can imagine the look on my face when the salesman said " we only have the display unit for now, the M-2 new stock be arriving the end of the month and we'll get at least 10 pairs of them". What M-2? 10 pairs??? Still with my finger pointing straight at the rack righteously insisted that they were B-2, the young salesman, short of using the term "you fucking idiot", said "No, no, no, those are M-2, replica of the B-2, but it's a new model!

Before any further, a little background on the B-2s may be a good idea. It was a celebrated product for Monitor Audio's 30th Anniversary (Est in 1972). The B-2 employed some really neat features: the cabinet has figure-8 shaped internal bracing (for rigidity), a ceramic-coated aluminum tweeter that, unlike most metal domes, doesn't sound bright, and sings flawlessly with a 6.5" easy driven polymer-coated metal matrix woofer. Underneath her "homely" appearance, the B-2 had aviation grade galvanized bolts (8 bolts per 6.5" driver!) and state-of-the-art CNC router fitting all drivers flush to the rim. Certainly, you would expect to see this workmanship on bookshelf speakers north of $10,000, but at the price of $3,000?

Sound wise, terms like - unusually clean, open, detailed, airy and bass notes that are remarkably powerful & weighty - all been frequently used in reviews (the B-2 got voted and stayed on TAS Recommended loudspeakers list from birth - issue #140, #143, #148). But the reason I still keep 2 pairs around is because they have an easy driven 90 dB sensitivity and play big with tube amps as low as 30 watts! This is a real treat compare to all the power hungry little boxes out there nowadays, including the Usher S-520 (which btw, a league below the B-2 in almost every aspect). In fact, at the time when the B-2 came out, Usher did not exist, the contender at the time was the Snell K.5 Mk2 which cost 4 times the money. I once hooked up a pair in my old man's den with a 35 watts PrimaLuna ProLogue One few years back for him to have a little fun, he ended up calling Alan Yu (Excel hi-fi) to complete a full blown satellite system adding a Paradigm Reference Servo -15 (same sub Excel used with the Maggie 20.1 in shows), the pipe organ music shook the building pretty good afterward and the old man was cranking it every morning (which may have spooked his next door neighbor, eventually sold their property and moved). Other goodies on the B-2 are the pair of 6.5" woofers, a rare feature for small speakers and front-ported, sign of a true bookshelf.

In any case, the B-2 eventually got replaced by the BR-2 which were made in China. Though the same dimension, the built quality saw a significant drop. The powder coated metal chassis became plastic, CNC router works are gone and the expansive galvanized bolts are now just stainless steel screws. The sonic quality of the BR-2, however, similar to the B-2 but little shy in body and noticeably brighter, probably aiming more towards the AV market. So it's quite a surprise, say the least, to see Monitor Audio after all these years, suddenly decided to replicate the B-2 once again under the new name of M-2. With the current inflation rate, at the price of only $2,700/pair, if the M-2 can match anywhere close to the B-2 performance, probably be the best "Quantitative Easing" on a pair of new speakers!

I also had the Plantir Artisan for a brief period, ' thanks' for recommendation from Winston Ma and Leo. It was claimed as small speaker producing big speaker sound.

If ever I am to rate the mini-speakers again, I guess the LS3/5a must still be at the very top of the echelon, not because of her musicality, nor her amazing power handling capability, but the accuracy by which the mid-range is uncannily reproduced.

Bearing in mind the limitations of the bookshelf speakers in general, the mid-range must remain the vital area where fundamentals of all music lie, and any coloration or anomaly within these two or three octaves will disqualify an otherwise superlative design over the frequency extremes.

Yet it is exactly this area where the 3/5a really shines.

Let's not forget the Celestion SL600, a classic British mini monitor. I think it is the first speaker to use the aluminum honey comb sheet as cabinet material with drastic reduction in boxy coloration. I've been using it for several years, even mated it with a subwoofer, the Rogers Bassman, though with little success.

Sonus Faber EXTREMA - the 'Maximus' of bookshelf gladiators. I was looking to acquire a pair from a MK 2nd hand shop few months back. The condition was so, so and the salesman wanted somewhere around $60K for it. So I left them there thinking why not just get a new pair of Maggies 3.6 at $35K?

Cpsjj, I remember your King of Spade - Spica TC-50 demo at Sai Kung old fart's last year! This "bookshelf speakers" category is no piece-of-cake. Yes, I concur with Gingers and limage that the 3/5 a has it's special merit (and over priced!) but the competitions are mercilessly strong! Here's another contender from a long list of gladiators.

Morning gents,

Coupon, thekong is being polite. I'm terribly sorry to say that some of the guests prefer your ML-2/Usher 520 combo over the Goldmund. And indeed, looking forward to next round with a pre-amp (and TT) added. I must also say how much I admire your effort in bringing the Usher 520 to life. Though they are ridiculously affordable, extremely well made! And your effort is what really inspired me to start this thread. Again, thank you!

Hi coupon,

Thanks for letting us, the crazy bunch, visit your lovely home. Your DCS/Levinson/Usher system was very good sounding indeed.

Regarding the addition of a subwoofer, it is usually not an easy task.
1) I believe it is better to use 2 subwoofers (1 for each channel) instead of 1.
2) You need to decide on what kind of subwoofer to use; sealed or ported. I believe it is better to use sealed subwoofers in a 2 channels system, but other more experienced members of this forum may have other suggestions.
3) You need to decide whether to use an electronic Xover, or using the subwoofer as an add on (with the Usher still doing full range)
4) You need to prepare to spend a lot of time in integrating (Xover frequency, placement of speakers and sub-woofer. etc.) the Usher and the sub-woofers.

It is a lot of work, but the result can be quite rewarding! Have fun :-)

Thanks Kris for taking such a wonderful photos of my dog and gears.

Initially when I hook up this 2nd system, I just want to test if my friend's DCS gear is working properly. But then when I start feeding the system with CD after CD, I came to realize how amazing these little speakers sound. I will try to find myself a decent Pre amp to add into the system to hope that I can further improve the dynamic and later I will try hook up some subwoofers to enhence the bass.
