Arthur,
Ratios roughly at prime numbers like 13, 17, 23 etc are safe and proven to work beautifully. It does not mean, however, that these ratios are the only rule of thumb. I've tried, on various other occasions, ratios of 16, 14, 24 & 33. They all work pretty well.
The only thing to watch out is basically staying away from multiples or near multiples and that's it!
For most domestic applications, I believe the major problem is to create a shoebox with just 3 dimensions while at the same time, catering to different requirements of the family members.

Hi Limage,
Using your excel table. It seems that the line marked by*** and ** are options.
The ratios are all odd numbers. But it seems that most of your successful stories have the ratios of 13,23,17
The one marked ** has 13, 29,23

You won't be disappointed!

This shows how I have the dimensions of the audio room determined by using Excel worksheet. There is no Golden Ratio per se, and any room can be a good audio room provided you stay away from straight multiples or near multiples when you calculate the dimension ratios.
It's usually possible to leave 2 of the 3 dimensions intact when modifications become necessary. This would help to keep the work to the minimum and hence saving time and money.
To facilitate ratio calculations, excel is a handy tool. The best choice IMHO is the one on the last line.

Cadiver,
With a nine foot ceiling, commendable area would be 12 x 20.5 feet. Ratios in red are lethal and those in green are desirable.
Ratios at the 1st line feature two identical value of 1.3333. Just wonder how it would sound!

Frankly I do not know. It's more or less a process of trial & error and since we cannot possibly exhaust every different combination, we'll just have to leave it to chance. I have tried prime number of ratios, like 1.3, 1.7 and 2.3 which did bring substantial amount of success. So I suppose it must be good.
One thing is absolutely certain now. We must avoid multiples and near-multiples which are sure to bring serious resonance, the rest become possibilities we have yet to explore. While I am confident we have a balanced response of no more than ± 3 to 4db, we cannot be sure whether that +3db should fall on 70 Hz or 65 Hz!

Limage, without moving the glass wall at the back, the length is pretty much fixed at 28.5', and the ceiling height is also fixed at 10.83' . So, other than having a smaller room size, is there any advantage going for 17' or 17.5' in width instead of 18' ? |

____________
You know me, certainly will go for the 17' to 18' range in width ;-)
Thanks Limage for doing the inspection and calculation, really appreciate it !

Kong,
Further to our inspection of the site, I've worked out the possible dimensions. While all the combinations listed are essentially benign, I would recommend the one down at the very bottom.
2 reasons:
- A smaller sized room is usually easier to get good sound
- 400+ sq ft is big enough for any big speakers on earth

I prefer the first one. My reason is the grey wall at the back looks more natural and more solid. The second is a tad bright or light on the grey, this can be noticed when you move your eyes to the black walls on the side as well where the black is not as solid as the first photo.
just my 2 cents .... |

I believe there is a standard, and just like TVs and projectors, there are ways to calibrate your computer screen. However, the calibration process can be very tedious and require some special gears. There is even a professional course you can take on the topic. |
