the new drivers have shiny coating, a mixture of violin lacquered, c37, and fine crystal powder or something.

I can see see some whitish powdery stuff on the back of the cone as well.

Some updates:

Both new 18" woofer and all 4 new Chrystal widebanders installed and are approximately in their 50 hours mileange, and they are sounding promising to my ears. Some of the nasties that I was complaining about are now gone forever (though most people who came to listen did not notice those things i complains about).

It is an worthwhile upgrade. My 6c33 amp has never sounded better.

Now my system runs like this: Thorsten-modded Satch 1541s double crown tube dac -> Django TVC -> 6c33 single end power amp.

Lucky you man : )

That's something I've been craving for, for the past few months....!!!

BTW, I read the review of Thorsten's latest AMR DP-777 DAC....wow....awesome..

Only John Brown and him currently can do the TDA1541 right AFAIK?..

Anyway, happy to be the #7 guy in the queue on his fanclub list though...so might eventually put together something similar, hoping hard on this : )

I also look forward to the arrival of Patrick's ESS9022 DAC module next month or so to clock-slave your QA550 SD player via i2s....could be interesting....Joachim Gerhard did some filter-buffer design on it....perhaps my 26 DHT pre's input trans might perform the HF filtering job naturally...and no need for Joachim's buffer to smooth the ESS thing out.....

Anyway, happy CNY to you all!!

Yesterday afternoon Clinton (aka Boylah), Cft (aka Pluto) and Thorsten Loesch had a small gathering in my Kwai Hing den and we went for yumcha together. It was a fun afternoon. This was also the first time Mr. Loesch visited my place and heard my system. He was also a user of the early Bastanis Prometheus open baffle and it was his review which made Bastanis baffle known to people outside Germany.

Above all, I received a new toy, a new DAC: Out went and sold the Promitheus 1545 nos dac (opamp with output transformer), in came Thorsten's very own Satch tube dac featuring two double crown 1541a S2 chips and lots of his own secret tweak inside.

Per Bastanis website:

"Compared to the previous model the Bastanis CHRYSTAL wideband drivers show dramatically reduced distortions from the cone itself.
The well known Bastanis MANDALA wideband drivers were the leaders and still showed lowest distortion-levels, only beaten by the AlNiCo wideband drivers of the exclusive Bastanis APOLLO speakers. The Bastanis CHRYSTAL wideband drivers excell the normal MANDALA wideband drivers in clarity, refinement and natural sound and equal the Bastanis APOLLO AlNiCo widebands.

The Bastanis CHRYSTAL wideband-drivers don‘t show the common restrictions of dynamic speakers and make the Bastanis MANDALA speakers become a musical instrument which touches the listeners soul more intense than ever. For music lovers the CHRYSTAL wideband-driver equipped Bastanis MANDALA speakers are a tool which let you dive deeper into the music.

The advanced CHRYSTAL driver cone-treatments take about eight weeks. It‘s done in several steps using slow drying vioilin-varnishes and unique methods of de-stressing the cones. The basic treatments are slightly different from the treatments of the common Bastanis MANDALA wideband-drivers which stay in the program. "

Thanks Daiwok, Icefox, Ken1967 and Edwin for dropping by and spent a great deal of time in my room.

The Bastanis is gradually coming along as it took really long time to burn in, hard to believe and I almost gave up on them. Their transparency and neutrality also means that if your upstream source has something wrong, the Bastanis will show it, right in your face.

I will play around more with room placement though I quite enjoy the sound as it is but always there is room for improvement. Time for my RTA to work and get a good look at the room measurement in curve.

The next time you come here the 4 12" widebanders would have been upgraded to the latest Chrystal version that has completely different violin lacquere coating. And according to the guy who is using them too (the guy who owns the system in the picture/terminator designer), the new version are a whole world better, being more organic in presentation.

That would be November..

回覆 (108): Looking for 6c33 NOS
Big thanks to Welborne for being so generous and civilised with the whole affair. The purpose of the audition was not to only listen to the Bastanis but also like aways find ways to help a fellow audiophile and friend to improve matters.

The Bastanis are not new to me, I have heard them on several occasions in UK. The drivers are very well made and the transparency is very very good, in fact I would find it hard to distinguish the difference between them and my AER MD3 front horns - plus the Bastanis are true open baffle as well.

Photo is a pair I heard in UK at the home of the guy who makes the Terminator tonearm.

The biggest problem I find is how to argument the bass, it is a di-pole kind of bass and it needs to be coupled to the room, too much and you get node reflection and too little and it just dry as a daisy.

I had to admire Coleman being such a gentlemen, never flustered while I was twiddling his knobs ! @[email protected] I have some experience in Active crossover, but the Bastanis are a bit different. The top drivers from what I can see are passive and aligned giving probably 20Khz to 100Hz, the Bass is crossed at 4th order 24db and at 100Hz as well. This is where I find the challenge is.

After some trial and error, we manage to find a compromised spot in the crossover and volume crontrols and got some pretty good sound. Transparency is superb, imaging is very good with good transient attacks. The 18 inch bass will need time to run in and as they run in, the crossover power and everything will need to be fine tuned. The system will sound superb in future as all the drivers open up. Like I said, the real challenge is getting the speakers to integrate properly over time and finding that sweet spot in the listening room. There is no doubt that these are very good speakers IMHO.

Coleman - big thanks for the hospitality !

Oh, that's so special! Thanks for the links! Ah, Lowther field coil, similar but in a different league which makes my PM7A look like a small baby!

Excited when seeing serious Hi Fi people take Lowther, AER, Supervox etc as serious contenders for their set up. I blame it on Lowther for the current ugly looking MDF cabinets and almost zero after sales services and terrible marketing. They started well 50 years ago but left it there with little improvement ever since.

Last week, i for the first time listen to a pair of boxiness Apogee. Not excatly an open baffle. Is it? Wow, very good! I like it when people try and experiment to bring out the best of something. That's attractive!

the last one is probably the lastest. Chopper is a friend of Nelson Pass. He tried many lowther/supravox/feastrex and got hyper on feastrex, but finally made a version using Lowther and Raal ribbons and Tone Tubby alnico woofers and he thinks this is the best of them all.

It's fun to try differnet amps and set up. Different partners! Why not? Hi Fi only!

No, I was referring to Svetlana 811-10 which can offer 15Watts in SE. Oh, the VT25, nice valve. Very nice valve.

I have been listening to Lowther back loaded horn for more than 15 years and some guys told me to try Lowther in an open baffle set up. Any advice you can offer?

icefox,

indeed welome, though i can't guarantee satisfactory sound as speakers are still 'burning in" my goodness, though now is much better than 1 month ago, and before that.

You can call me open minded, but i think jumping around is a trait of my another hobby - tango dancing. :).

I still love Nuforce very much that i lived with for 2 years. Sold it and got the 300b and modded it. Well, I wish i had kept the nuforce but then it was with my last vintage driver baffle that is more forgiving on electronics and there was a synergy between the fast sounding nuforce and the mellow german vintage. I miss the resolution, dark background and dynamics. 6c33 reminds me a bit of that, but with more tubby harmonics.

speaking of 10, do you mean v25/10y family? i still have about a few pairs under my bed, some are early de forest 10, taylor globe, cunningham 310 and some WE VT25 and not to mention the more commonly found rca/sylvania vt25. All sound nice to my ears on my long gone sun audio vt25 amp. But it was a Colin 71a direct coupled amp that I heard and kicked the sun audio amp out of my room about 10 years ago.

One thing stays quite long in my room the last few years though - boxless speaker, open baffle and high efficiency (above 96db at least) Can't quite go back to anything less efficient and with a box.

6c33 amp are you using and with what speakers?
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I only recently joined 1PR and has never been active outing, so chance that we have met is low.

Glad to see greater variety of valve amps here instead of the more commonly used 300B SE. Just more interesting and fun! And many thanks for the sharing. I have a Tango 600ohms SE for the 6C33C and because the 6C33C/Tango sound so surprisely good, I am planning to rebuild it with greater care as my next project after the 811-10 PPP amp. I am using Lowther PM7A in an Acousta. Currently I have my PP 6B4G feeding 15W to the Lowther. Love it!

6C18 is an earlier version of the 6C33C without the three horns! Not as well construct and reliable but many people say it sound better! The trouble when buying 6C33C is that most sellers dont have the means to match them and I think only the Russian made them. No extra fun from comparing different brands!

To me, Svetlana 811-3 or 10, 6B4G, EL156 and 6C33C are my all time choice of valves. Hong Kong Bush still has a small number in stock if you prefer not to buy online.

I was actually worrying about it being harsh and aggressive sounding after consulted a few pair of experienced ears with 6c33. There was indeed a small trait of that character with the stock chinese 5z3 rectifiers and chinese 6j4p upon arrival. It is gone after I have replaced them with a pair of Chatham 5r4wga and RCA 6ac7 metal can at the input stage.

Hi Welborne, a 6C33C user myself. pleased to hear you like it more than your 300B SE. I find the 6C33C more transparent and overall nice sounding. Share your experience if you like.
--------------------
hi bobui, what 6c33 amp are you using and with what speakers? I can't recall we have talked or met before, haven't we? nice to chime in here.

I can't speak for all 6c33 amp in general and my impression is simply based on my first and only 6c33 amp and one with a more traditional topology using output transformer instead of OTL. It just happens i still have a few tube amps in my room (some are mine, some are on load) to compare against it, Even on my 100db/1w open baffle, the 6c33 amp does present a much deeper soundstage, better layering, better instrument positioning especially vocal, i.e.overall a much better sense of 3D, much much better dynamics than the 2a3 Monoblock from Bottlehead Paramour. What surprises most is that even in the emotional department (especially with recordings rich in vocal such as opera, arias, choral works etc) the 6c33 sounds more charming to my ears than the 2a3, which is not what I am quite prepared for. The top end harmonics may not be as refined and microscopicly depicted as the 2a3 and 71a amp, both of these are direct coupling circuits of directly heated triode giving probably some of the best resolution in tube amp territory. However, with the 6c33 amp, I am getting a strong impression that I actually hear "more stuff in the background" from the same recordings. These "extra" info that i hear are from the mid and mid-bass range and the presence of which actually widen and deepen the soundstage and give vocal a realism that I can't quite get from my 2a3, 71a and 300b experience. To put it shortly in a line, the 6c33 amp does sound more natrual and realistic than the other 3 tube amps in the same room.

Hi drking,

Yes, the 300b amp so far is not so convincing. I dont' knwo what exactly went wrong but having consulted someone who know 300b quite a bit better, I probably have omitted by mistake one or two gridstopper resistoar in the first two stages, and above all the plate bias of 300b also should be adjusted at the same time which we did not deal with. The b+ is left quite high. I don't think it was the parts quality or a combo of those that messed thing up, but instead somewhere in the circuit we missed hitting a target. If I had to do it again, I would rather build a new 300b amp from scratch. It was a waste of time, but a good lesson to learn.

Against this background, the 6c33 amp does sound a country better. It may also because my Bastanis's top baffles have two 12" widebanders each has a 3-inches voice coil and a higher current/damping tube amp does have chance to perform quite a lot better.

300B SE that are modded with permalloy output
---------------------------------------------------------------

The 6C33C may not be the best audio valve but the lower internal resistance is a dream come true for output transformer maker. Less turns, less copper wire! The transfomer can acheive greater bandwidth at ease. Even material suddenly become secondary. For DIY, this is also a dream come true because you can acheive high power with lower HT.
