Just some progress sharing:

The BBR has received favourable comment after home trial by a gang of modern Goldmund system users. It is now under review by an audiophile who is a UK vintage power amp collector as well as an ESL 57 owner.

Will arrange audition by CP and Icefox next week.

King, thanks again,

My enquiry is more cpomplicated and I think I need to seek for your opinion on my grounding when we next met face to face. Meanwhile, I am experimenting a grounding device called Entreq Minimum from Sweden. Will need to consult you later. Million thanks. Dennis

i'm no expert in switch design. i'm just a user. shallco is not japanese. i think it is us. shallco is definitely much better than elma. most shallco i have seen are not sealed type. so if there is noise generated, it is quite easy to clean. on top of that it has wiping design that wiper will wipe clean the contact when it is turned. so a periodic rotation of the switch will ensure a good and clean contact surface. noise produced has nothing to do with grounding so it does not matter how u ground the box or whatever grounding gagdet you get. it would not help.

Thanks King,

I understand you are the expert in switch design. Just curious, did you mention the Japanese shalco has a better design to clean the contact point automatically? Would it be a safer bet to turn to Shalco for reliability? I learn that the Swiss Eelma can only accept 24 level while the shalco design can accept more up to 46 level.

I wish to learn from you more about how you opinion on handling audio signal grounding. We are more aware of the pollution today, whether from the external vicinity or the equipment cross-talking themselves. Any advice and guidelines for us to follow? Please take note that I live on 11/f and unlikely to hit the MK6 JP in near future to afford the luxury of owning a real garden.

Would an artificial grounding box like Taralab made or Entreq works well in a polluted system? I may try if you advised me a planting pot filled with earth soil works as well as a real garden.

So, please ensure you yourself are fully knowledgeable and DIY capable as good as Derek, Dr King, Daiwok or CP etc as well as a pair of steady hands like KH before commiting any procedure. Of course at your bloody own risk, my forewarning.

not considering the resale value, it is much better to get rid of those crapy elma switch. anyway, i don't think the problem is to do with dirty wipers. dirty wiper will produce noise but not pop sound.

Dear MFA owners ,

I have received some valuable advice on switch cleaning procedures from UK, of course at owners' risk. If you wish to read to try out, please forward you contact email address to me.

I am sure I won't be capable to handle the delicate cleaning steps myself after reading the first few line of intructions. Instead I would send back to UK if service is due.

So, please ensure you yourself are fully knowledgeable and DIY capable as good as Derek, Dr King, Daiwok or CP etc as well as a pair of steady hands like KH before commiting any procedure. Of course at your bloody own risk, my forewarning.

PS: Please take note that DIY does not apply to the terms defined by our master Feikeung.

Acording to the problem description from user, the noise happens at all stepped level, not at single or some particular point. Any further suggestion?
------
i didn't say one step. it will depend how the switch fails. if there is only misalignment of the wiper, then it is likely to affect one or more steps. if the wiper is distorted along the axis, it might shift when it is turned. this will create a pop sound whenever it is turned. i don't know which switch MFA used. but juding by the quality of other components used in the MFA, it is probably some crappy switch. i hope it is not something like Elma.

I received an enquiry from a review33 member who is using a silver MFA Mk1 passive pre. He said whenever turning up or down the volume control, he'd hear a "pop" sound coming out from the speaker. Any idea of why or how this could happen. He is using xlr connection.
----------
this is called the curse of the mechanical switch. it is possible that the switch has gone south. switch used for a volume control should be make before break. it could be that the wiper of the switch temporaily disconnect from the contacts when it is rotated. this will produce a pop sound.
