回覆 (45): Cycling improve sound quality for LP record
This "Polka Dot Cycling figure" record clamp improve the sound quality to an unrecognized new level. You need to try it to believe it! I am thinking of getting a few more to make it possible to line them up around the spindle for fine tuning!

Oh, one small additional note. If you are looking for power rather than resolution, you should get a cycling figure in the Tour de France Green jersey instead of the polka dot! For overall sound quality improvement, look no further than a Tour de France Yellow jersey!

Members planning on trying these silver cream type enhancers on tube pins should be careful not to put too much, just a very thin film would be enough! There has been reports that excessive cream could drip down and caused shorts!

As a contact enhancer yes. I have used it on my tubes for several years. Not sure if it made any difference. Should try some on my carts I guess !

I am not talking about mercury.
It's daiwok's recommendation: Silclear Contact Enhancer which looks more like metal mender.

The mercury is not that thick and is suppose to provide a bit of damping to the arm. What so strange is if it really work well in terms of electron transmission, then the whole principal about cable shielding, low inductance and low capacitance would all go down the four wells which filled with mercury!

And after all, mercury is just ok as a conductor. No where near copper and silver lor!

The arm itself is very well construct. Very solid feel compare with let say the decca. There is actually a ball bearing that sits on the unpivot shaft.

Cheap man Naim Aro! or a high class Decca!

Bobui,

I believe this arm was developed by John Wright who use to work for Decca. Our good friend "old fart" has recently bought one on my recommendation with 2 wands. Why would you want one ? because it is a good mate for the Decca cartridges of old.

This arm developed for Keith Month was the lead up for the Decca International Tonearm. the magnetic damping is a common feature in both

So what about the mercury ? well you can try this stuff. I have some at home, not expensive to order and should do the job.

I read very similar comments about the pins too. There are two versions. One version with two copper pins and two stainless pins. The other version have all pins in stainless. The copper pins needed to be scraped after a while. The stainless are fine.

A mask may be a bit overkill as I wont be sniffing around the arm but rubber gloves a must to avoid skin contact when refilling the arm.

The following comment is from the internet:

“I had one of those for about a year when it first came out. The main bearing was a unipivot. There were four contact pins on the arm that dipped into four pools of mercury around the center bearing. Two of the pins were steel and the other two were copper (or brass, I forget). There was a magnet placed below the pools so that the attraction to the two steel pins would apply the (non-adjustable) anti-skating force.

The problem is that many metals are soluble in mercury. After a month or so, you would have to pull the arm off (no attachments) and scrape the pins to get a fresh connection. (The lead out wires were soldered to brass buttons at the bottoms of the mercury pools.) The whole thing was better on paper than in real life.”

Looks like you have to clean the pins periodically, so can't avoid making contact to the mercury!

How can you avoid inhaling the mercury vapor? By wearing a gas mask, or holding your breath, whenever you are close to the arm?

While not sure whether it was true, I remember reading somewhere that the mercury bearing TT designer actually died of mercury poison!

So, you be the judge!

The Keith Monks instruction said that after a few hours use, a light film will form on the surface of the mercury (mainly preventing further oxidization). This is of no consequences as the electrodes of the arm penetrate the surface of the mercury. Perhaps, it is this reason that the turntable designer recommended oil on top of the mercury.

In the case of the KM arm, I don't think pouring in a few drops of oil is a good idea as the mercury is use as conductor as well as damping. The pins that carry the signals will soak up the oil before getting in touch with the mercury.

I did check the conduction ability of mercury on the web. Not bad but not good. No where near silver and copper lor!

The mercury bearing TT article mentioned that the designer put some oil on top of the mercury to seal off the vapor.

Not sure if that really works, but if it does then you may want to do the same if you decide to use the arm.

Again not sure if it is true, but I read that mercury is only a fair conductor, but its vapor conducts a lot better :-O

how can this be a commercial product?
---------------------------------------------------------
Strange Fact No 1. - The United States clean air act only came into effective in 1990 which put mercury as toxic to be controlled. Kind of later than I thought! Whatever happen to UK, I haven't got a bloody idea!

Strange Fact No 2. - The Keith Monks was a 1976 invention and production only continued for a few years. Kind of much earlier than I thought!

Strange Fact No 3. - I haven't got a bloody idea why I am keeping one.

Picture below show one of the four wells already filled with mercury. At the bottom of each well is a copper pin collector directly soldered to the tonearm wire.

Is Mercury a better conductor compare with copper? Can I have liquid silver please?

Took delivery of a Keith Monks arm. Heard about it for a long time but never had to the chance to more near one until today.

The design is similar to the Decca and the Naim Aro single unipivot with actual ball bearing sitting on the bearing cup. One very strange feature of the arm is the oil well which as you would think is to be filled with oil for damping. Well, if that is what you have in mind, you are only half correct. The other half is that the well surrounded the bearing shaft is actually use as a 'conductor' for the signals. The well is separated into four compartment (4 wells) and each is to be filled with mercury. Four pins will be tuck into the wells separately that carry the signals from the arm tube. Strange?

Very strange lor!

PCB Turntable AC power supply 12/12/2013

1st update:
1. Thanks to daiwok suggestions!
2. I have successfully download the component lists and building instructions from Lenco heaven.
3. After a quick glace at the circuit, it really aint as complicated as you may think. All components can be sourced from a single mail order supplier, Farnell.
4. Next I will investigate the total cost as per PCB/set and let you know.
5. Then, we will do a group mail order for all the PCB components inclusive of the two transformers.
5. For the chassis and other non-PCB components such as AC main sockets, cables, plugs, trimmers( higher quality). I will send you guys recommendations and cost list for a second group buy.
6. After the second group buy, you should have all that you need to start your own beautiful work.
7. I will build two samples for you guys to circulate around as building reference. One from my PCB. The second one will come from one of daiwok PCB.

Next update: I aim to give you PCB components per set cost from Farnell in the next few days.

Important Notes:
Since this is a project involve high lethal AC voltage, I suggest you check this thread for regular updates and advice. Please don't spend all your money on Christmas shopping and make sure you have sufficient cash to buy me a few glasses of 82' whenever you see me!

Bobui,

May be you can Groupon the components for us ? there is a component list where everything can be bought from RS but I am sure some of the components could be considered average at best, you may have some experience and preference to share.

After purchase, we can sign up for your class to show us how to solder everything together ?

what do you say Bro ?
